Russian Women and their Friends

An important issue you should not forget about is your wife’s friends. When she comes to the USA (or any other western country for that matter), she will be alone. She has just left her family, her friends and all that she knows for an unknown adventure in another country. Wow! That is quite a thing she is doing, just for a chance of love.

When Lena first arrived in San Francisco, it was a little scary for both of us. She also brought her daughter, who was 9 yo at the time. What an adventure is all I can say. I was staying with my Mom at the time, so we all lived in the same house. It was a good thing as Lena had someone to talk to while I was working. During this short period we were in California, one of Lena’s friends came to marry a man in Chicago. Things did not work out, so she came to San Francisco and stayed with some relatives there and called Lena. Lena was so happy to see a familiar face and someone to speak Russian to besides her daughter. Her friend was there for about a month or so just using up her visa before leaving back to Russia.

A few months later, we moved to Colorado. I accepted a job in Colorado Springs, where we are still living today. The process of Lena finding any Russian women seemed difficult. I think we were here for a year before she found anyone.

Russian Women

The process seemed so simple, but apparently it wasn’t. She found Russian Women forums that mostly had people from the Denver area writing on them. She placed a short note for someone Russian in Colorado Springs to contact her. Eventually, someone did. And it was someone who seemed to know all Russian women here in town. So we finally started meeting other Russian women and their families.

But it was/is still difficult to find other women that, shall we say, match. Just like USA women, not all people like each other enough to become friends. So, it is an ongoing process. Lena’s best friend here just moved to Japan with her husband, so she has been sad. We used to get together with them once or twice a month, so now we will have to find other friends to get out and do things with. But, it is an ongoing process and I am sure we will meet other couples to do things with.

Some suggestions to help your new Russian bride:

- Have her scour the internet for Russian Women forums to find out about possible local RW forums.

- Send her to an ESL class to learn English. Chances are she might meet someone there.

- Look for Russian or European store(s) in town. Most larger cities will have at least one. She might find contacts to local RW groups there. All of the Russian stores I have been in always display business cards of other people in the local Russian community.

For the guys – Be open and honest about this process. You want your wife to be happy and have friends, so suck it up if you find you’re not enjoying yourself. Do it for her so at least she can make some friends! Trust me, your life will be much more enjoyable.
