Russian Community Events

Do you ever go to an event that seems to never end? Sometimes I find myself wishing someone would just shoot me and get it over with.

Ok, maybe it’s not that bad, but some events just seem go on and on and on. Do you know what I mean?

Recently my wife was involved with organizing a local event. She was asked to play the piano as she is as good as a professional player (she used to teach piano in Russia). The event was a hit with the local Russian community. Lena played beautifully of course. I will give the organizer credit for trying to make this event more appealing to English speaking husbands of Russian wives and American friends by using a translator. But in all honesty, the event was much too long for us Americans who don’t speak Russian. Maybe if they served Vodka… After a few toasts we would have enjoyed it more and maybe even sung some of the songs better than the Russians in the audience.

On the other hand, I have been to many parties/events - birthdays, Christmas, New Years, etc. These kinds of events in my own opinion are always much more fun and successful. I guess since they are social events, us Americans can socialize and drink and feel more comfortable. The planned events that we feel obligated to go to so we can support our spouses are sometimes just a bit much for us. Yes, that’s the key. We Americans are social animals. We don’t even need the alcohol. Although, I have come to enjoy all the toasting. Makes for an interesting event.

Here is my suggestion for our next event - Russian women (well, all women) love to dance. Lets have a dance or all meet in a nightclub, dance and drink too much. Yes, some of you women will have to drag us guys out to this event, but there will be alcohol and once we have a few drinks and loosen up, we will dance. Yes, we might even have fun.

So, the moral of this story is that if you want to have an event for both Russians and Americans, serve Vodka!
