Russians and Food

Did you know that Russians eat pretty good? They love fish and sausages not to mention lots of other stuff.

Every trip I take to Russia is an adventure when comes to eating. Yes, there are things I know I like, but it seems I get to try new and different things each trip. This sometimes proves to be a bit more than I can handle. But all in all, it is a good time. My main drinks are always available - Pepsi and beer. And of course there is always vodka available.

Some of the things Russians like to eat:

Smoked Fish - usually mackerel or herring.

Caviar - there are several varieties in red and black. Caviar is a national delicacy. Most people buy the red caviar as it is much cheaper than beluga and other high end black caviar.

Selodka - This is a raw fish preserved in salt water. You prepare it with onions and either vegetable or olive oil. Great with vodka and potatoes.

Blins (also called blini) - This is a thin pancake or crepe like item. You can eat them with lots of things, but many like to eat soft boiled eggs and butter with them. Sometimes they are stuffed like a burrito with meat.

Pelmini - This is a small homemade type of ravioli. They look a little different (smaller and rounder) and they usually have meat w/spices inside them. This is a dish that is prepared by the whole family for special occasions.

Piroshky - This is a fried bread pocket with meat inside.

Plov - this is a dish made of meat (usually chicken or lamb) and rice with shredded carrot in it. This particular dish is traditionally prepared by the man of the house.

Shashlik - This is a kabob with marinated meat, vegetables and garlic. Again, this particular dish is traditionally prepared by the man of the house.

Shee - This is a cabbage soup that is pretty tasty.

Borsht - Beet soup. You either love it or you hate it!

These are just a few of the more popular dishes that we enjoy. Russians also like to make many different salads and cakes. Cakes and pies are called “tortes”. Cakes are made without preservatives and are all natural ingredients. In fact, most things in Russia don’t have preservatives in them.
